Beer – #838 – To Øl – Fuck Art – The Heathens Are Coming

The Heathens Are Coming  indeed. Swears on a beer label too, what’s it all coming to? I’ve been known to have a few swears now and again, I’m not comfortable though writing them, generally. I’m sure there is something to say about that, probably not in a positive way.

Be afraid! Be very afraid! 

This comes in the a 330ml bottle, is beer that is 5.4% ABV and 34 IBU, this them 1.41 standard drink units of a beer.

This is a beer by  To Øl brewed at De Proefbrouwerij  in the style that is a Saison and they’re in Copenhagen N, Denmark

Be afraid! Be very afraid! This puppy is twisting history. It is a grissette from back in the days when mother nature was a young stud.

As a part of their illustrious Fuck Art… “The Heathens Are Coming.”  takes classic Belgian-style beers and gives them a twist, often with some interesting yeasts added.

Grisettes are typically low-ish alcohol saison-ish style farmhouse beers, and To Øl went and added a good dose of rye malt, Simcoe and Galena US hops and brettanomyces. 

“The heathens are coming! Viking raiders landing ashore close to some poor French monks, who was trying to brew a rustic grisette type beer. The vikings brought Rye from Scandinavia as well as Simcoe and Galena Hops from their new Colonial adventures in the Americas. The Mons tried to stop the Vikings, but they threw away the monks, stole all their livestock, ate all their food and brewed a fantastic well balanced beer. Sweet spicy notes from the rye mixed with fruity hop varieties, echoing grapefruit, all rounded up by the Brettanomyces.

Then the Vikings took the beer back to Scandinavia, forgot the beer, formed a new country called Denmark, converted to Christianity and then we found the beer 1100 years later. Amazing!”

So, what could possibly go wrong?

A wine glass? Why yes, a wine glass, it’s art. Someone will think so.

Sour like an apple cider might be, but also sense thats has that same sweetness.

Certainly a pretty beer bright gold colour with a stark contrasting white head.

Aroma in the glass much as expected and no surprises.

No mistaking it for what it isn’t, this is a saison beer, farmhouse beer, it’s a bit rough and ready. I don’t know that there is much different or added to this from other beers, and have no idea what the twist or surprise might be,

It isn’t a bad beer, but I thought it was a little lacking in the body, might have expected some softer sugary thing going on, didn’t get that.  Still dazzled by how nice this looks as a beer, even in the comedy glass.

I Might then have been thinking more of, and expecting more a Belgium style ale, but no this is farmhouse, and I’ve had a couple,  farmhouse beers that is, and this one isn’t one that I’m comfortable with. Just lacks body.

Hazed up the glass with the last 1/3rd of the pour, didn’t do as much as you’d think except make the beer cloudy. You get that with the bit at the bottom though.

The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 7 of its things from the thing. I wanted something extraordinary, instead I got ordinary.  That adage that you just can’t like every beer, and this one is pretty average to be honest, ends towards a dull sourness that is uncomfortable and jarring.

• Where did I get it? I’m pretty sure it was the Liquorland in Forrest Hill, but I’m hazy.
• Am I enjoying it? Not really I talked myself into wanting to really enjoy it.
• Would I have another? No I’ll pass.
• Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? No. Nothing to see here, jog on.
