A life just as ordinary

Just like you, but different

Beer – #775 – Baylands – Wai-Fly III

Fresh hop beers are plentiful at the moment, and so it is with  Baylands Wai-Fly III. I have no idea how I missed the I and II version of this,  and on checking I’ve had the ordinary II,  I sighed, so many beers so little time, but this really does seem to be a beer of limited release so I’m chuffed to have some.

a full on riot of Nelson Sauvin

I’ve got 55IBU’s of  beer that is 6.7% ABV and about 200 calories a serve size. This is from the fill station and I have the trust 1 litre making it 529 drink units worth in NZ.

Brewed by Baylands Brewery this one is in the style that is : India Pale Ale (IPA) and they are in Lower Hutt, New Zealand

I'm on a roll of fine beers

2016 Fresh Hop Ipa Wai-Fly III, hopped with a full on riot of Nelson Sauvin, Cascade and Centennial hops.

or if you like “A bitter, moderately strong American pale ale that uses its clean, supporting malt to showcase its hop character”

So, what could possibly go wrong?

Love that smell of fresh beer, and fresh hop beer with that resinous grassy thing and a lovely sweetness in it.

It’s a dull orange colour, with not much by way if head occurring even though I gave it a bit of a try, It isn’t the end of the world. Cracking aroma in the glass. There is an even sharper hop resinous note, almost oily,

Wow that is all of it’s IBU things, that is very sharply bitter, and instantly dry on the tongue, like a slap.

Wai FlyTaste is full of citrus bitter things like grapefruit. Funny thing is that this then became a whole lot calmer and whole lot more smooth and balanced, that or I became instantly immune. What a tasty beer and nice drink this is.

And that burst of really intense bitter, that was a thing from the past too,. Did I say how nice this became?

Also it isn’t that dry.

I might now be reading Jekyll and Hyde.  I’m not going to make this a 3 pour beer and have a best 2 for 3 series, sometimes you have to be creative, right?

Although there really is no reason to do so, to be honest. I think you know if a beer is good, or not, quite quickly.  I’m even going to quote myself next, well I’m jut going to go straight to the quote.

After the initial shock burst this turned into a really decent drinking beer, and so a smile issued forth.

Lovely, nice and easy going, I feel even more chuffed that I’ve managed to get some of what is a pretty small production run of beer.

Surprisingly the last pour, the third, was the best looking in terms of head, and seemed to be the best looking and most colourful. I declare the best-of-three result a draw.

The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 9 of its things from the thing. In Pdubyah-world I’d like this to have have more malt sweetness in the middle perhaps and that would have been divine. It is easy to be picky. It’s also pretty easy to be seduced by ‘fresh hop’ beer as being something special or revered. They are special because clearly it’s fresh harvest hops, but not of the work out well, or as intended, and I’d hop that I’m not that much a fan boy that I’d fawn over a beer that didn’t deserve it.  That said I’d buy this for you without a hesitation as it is worthy, very worthy.

The double dip review

  • Where did I get it? Liquorland in Forrest Hill, it’s pretty hard to find otherwise.
  • Am I enjoying it? I so am, it really does lick a lot of boxes, on an imaginary form that does not exist that has boxes with questions that start “Does this..”
  • Would I have another? I pretty much would without hesitation
  • Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? Yes, this is wonderful Fresh hop beer at a very high standard and standard. Drinkable, aromatic, looks a picture, and made me smile.

Music for this: ” Marvin Gaye” and one of the many ‘ Live ‘ Albums, this one on Spotify

INDIA PALE ALE & IPA

India Pale Ale gets its name and unique style from British brewers who were making beer for export to India. This style has an intense hop flavor which was used to preserve the beer for the long voyage. India Pale Ale has a golden to copper color with a medium maltiness and body. The aroma is moderate to very strong. IPAs work especially well at cutting the heat of chili, vindaloo or Sichuan cuisine.

This is where an IPA loses me. To me, this isn’t really drinkable. Glad you enjoyed it though!
