A life just as ordinary

Just like you, but different

Herevana – #190 – Brood Fermentation – PIP

I’m having a special beer, Brood Fermentation Pip. Special in that Brood Fermentation beers are not that readily available and are not easy to get one before they are all gone, it’s a challenge. Also special as this will the the first Brood Fermentation beers I’ve written about here.

I’ve been trying to move away from the various Sours, Saisons, Dubbel etc, and the cupboard stash is diminishing, but I will always have time for something describes as “Barrel Aged Farmhouse Ale” because it screams “this should be good”, it’s also in a glass bottle, a diminishing sight on shelves.

Brood Fermentation make Pip in Brightwater, Nelson, New Zealand 🇳🇿 as a Saison / Farmhouse – Flavored beer of 5.5% ABV

On opening, the aroma is a sweet musty nicety. The pour is a really pale yellow beer, with ample carbonation but not enough to form a mention of a head, so a beer that is sitting placid in the glass the bubbles rising languidly.

Strong wine like taste over a short sharp bitterness of beer, with an equally as sudden and short dryness. I might have mentioned the Gewurtztraminer skins and Resiling Lees.

I left if for a few moments to gather itself in the glass and there is a delicious sweetness that should not surprise anyone, this is really enjoyable. The lovely balance of the sweetness and the dryness, and the sweetness and the dryness is particularly of note and is impressive.

This is a well delivered and thoughtful beer in my opinion.

The Pdubyah-o-meter rates this as a 9 on the arbitrary number scale. I really enjoyable and refreshing beer that delivered all it needed to and added its own dimensions and take. I should have brought two.

Music: I really am enjoying the rather easy to listen to album from Andrew Bird called “The Mysterious Production of Eggs”

Herevana beers are those I drink at home, I’m not at some beer festival, like, for instance, Beervana, but am just in my kitchen, usually, dining room table, sometimes, or outside, occasionally, where I can take an average picture and write in real time about the beer that I’ve invested in, both in a monetary and emotional way.

Philip himself.

Mixed culture farmhouse saison fermented on Riesling lees in large format oak. Aged for 18 months then reconditioned on 2023 gewurztraminer skins.

Brewers Notes

Saison / Farmhouse – Flavored

The Flavored Saison, or Flavored Farmhouse Ale, is a refreshing, highly-attenuated, moderately-bitter, moderate-strength Belgian ale with a very dry finish with a clear flavoring element. Typically highly carbonated, and using non-barley cereal grains and optional spices for complexity, as complements the expressive yeast character that is fruity, spicy, and not overly phenolic. It features an harmonious marriage of the additive and beer, but still recognizable as a beer. The additive character should be evident but in balance with the beer. (For example: fruits, spices, herbs, vegetables, coffee, honey, chocolate, maple sirup, chilies, nuts, vanilla, liquor – BUT not including Smoked malt, barrel-aging or a Sour element resulting from the brewing process
