A life just as ordinary

Just like you, but different

Herevana – Affligem – Dubbel

For a lovely sunny Sunday I have another of the Belgian beers I brought, the Affligem Dubbel – Double, brewed by Brouwerij Affligem / De Smedt (Heineken) in 🇧🇪 Opwijk, Flemish Brabant, Belgium. It is of course a Dubbel of 6.8% and 21 IBU things.

The Wonky glass again, I can’t help that it’s a nice to drink from glass that sits nicely in my hand, which is also becoming wonky with Arthritis, it was meant to be.

A much darker redder beer than that I’d imagined, and yes I read the descriptions, and a fleeting head made this look lovely in the glass. A lovely rich aroma from the pour too.

Not as rich or full as I might have enjoyed but there is a lot of those familiar flavours and notes in this that made me smile. The notes put a lot of things straight though, this isn’t supposed to be over rich, full or manly, I must just have that stuck in my head from years ago.

This is not stopping me from enjoying this, as it is very fine beer, It is also from a Brewery that I’ve not had a beer from before, so tick that one off the list, and a good starter for ’24.

The Pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 7 on the arbitrary number scale. I found it under-carbonated and a little short of my expectation, I think that this a little bit column A, little bit of B, I might have higher expectations and this falls over a bit on that carbonation aspect. I can live with the less malty and less full.

Music: Some New Zealand Music, an up and coming band ‘No Cigar” I can see why they are popular.

Herevana beers are those I drink at home, I’m not at some beer festival, like, for instance, Beervana, but am just in my kitchen, usually, dining room table, sometimes, or outside, occasionally, where I can take an average picture and write in real time about the beer that I’ve invested in, both in a monetary and emotional way.

Philip himself.

Rich ruby-brown with a firm, silky head and strong natural carbonation. Leads on complex clove, spice, anise, raisin, molasses and banana aromas. A deep spicy clove flavor mellows into softer, caramel fruity taste.

A silky, spicy mouth-feel. Finaly balanced alcohol with plenty of hoppy dryness gives great structure and keeps it brighter than many other doubles. On swirling, the yeast-bite gives out stronger banana notes, yeasty spice and aroma hops

A reddish-brown abbey ale brewed with dark malts. The secondary fermentation gives a fruity aroma and a unique spicy character with a distinctive aftertaste. Secondary fermentation in the bottle.

Brewers Notes

Dubbel

The Belgian Dubbel, also known as Trappist Dubbel, is a deep reddish-copper, moderately strong, malty, complex ale with rich malty flavors, dark or dried fruit esters, and light alcohol blended together in a malty presentation that still finishes fairly dry. Should not be as malty as a bock and should not have crystal malt-type sweetness. Similar in strength and balance as a Belgian Blonde Ale, but with a richer malt and ester profile. Less strong and intense as a Belgian Dark Strong Ale.
