Here we have the BeerJerkNZ beer of the week, a beer club, like a book club but for beer, always a new beer every weeks, never the same beer twice, Sailors Grave Sou’ East Draught.
Sailors Grave Brewing make the Sailors Grave Sou’ East Draught which is brewed in Orbost, Victoria,🇦🇺 Australia in, as close as I can tell, a Pale Lager – American (They’ll say Australian Draught) of 4.8% ABV.
It I much paler than I expected on the pour, and it delivers with a brilliant white fluff of head that sits full and loud and bright white atop.
The aroma is nothing out of ordinary, and pretty much ‘beer’. This really could be summed as “just a beer” and whilst is is clean on the taste and crisp sharp again I find that there is no real outstanding thing in this that would make is pop or sound out, which is either me be picky or just having an ‘everyman’ beer for a change, something that should be more pleasing and pleasant than the sometime shot in the dark surprise you can get.
Possibly I’m just being a curmudgeon on this because it really is quite pleasant and easily drinkable, and would make a lovely summer day beer in the sun, with friends and conversation and music and that sort of thing, sadly though it’s a two jumper afternoon that is sprinkled with rain.
The Pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 7 on the arbitrary number scale. I really do quite like it for what it is, but it really isn’t a leader or forging it’s own path. I think I’d like it a lot more in pints, in a pub somewhere.
Music: The Totally magnificent Sixto Rodriquez and the equally magnificent album Cold Fact.
Herevana beers are those I drink at home, I’m not at some beer festival, like, for instance, Beervana, but am just in my kitchen, usually, dining room table, sometimes, or outside, occasionally, where I can take an average picture and write in real time about the beer that I’ve invested in, both in a monetary and emotional way.
Philip himself.
Sou’ East Draught is beer that tastes like beer. Brewed with malt, hops, yeast & water. Low bitterness and no showy aromas or additives. Big on easy drinking sessionability with subtle Aussie hop flavours and a crisp finish making this a very crushable tinnie.
Brewers Notes.
The “American Lager” is a very pale, highly-carbonated, light-bodied, well-attenuated adjunct lager with a very neutral grainy flavor profile and low bitterness, paired with a crisp and dry finish. They also often appear as “Ice / Dry” versions, when they are even dryer with slightly more alcohol content. The “American Light Lager” is even more light-bodied and nearly flavorless lager designed to be consumed very cold. Less bitterness and flavor than an International Lager. Significantly less flavor, hops, and bitterness than traditional European Pilsners.
