Beer – #842 – Good George – Rocky Road White Stout
Good grief, Good George have make a white stout, it’s the companion to the dark stout that’s coming up. White Stout, now there’s an interesting thing. Which is why it goes first.
“… you’ll be partying like it’s your birthday.”
This is in 330ml can, 5% ABV and 150 calories a serve size, this is 1.3 standard drink units of beer.
Brewed by Good George Brewing in the style that is of a : Sweet Stout and they’re based in Hamilton, New Zealand
It’s Black and White
There is a reason Rocky Road is always the first thing to disappear at birthday parties.
Chocolate, Vanilla, Raspberry – it’s all the world’s greatest flavours in one Godly mashup.
The only way you could possibly improve it is by adding beer as well.
And that’s what we’ve done in this outrageous collaboration with Hamilton Choc-Heroes Donovans.
We’ve brewed two versions – White Stout & Black Stout. Try them both and you’ll be partying like it’s your birthday
So, what could possibly go wrong?
Lots of raspberry aroma, lots.
Yellow like a normal beer, and no head, just like the way I pour them. Lots of that raspberry aroma in the glass too.
Chocolate taste, light bitterness, and a dryness of sorts, and a linger of raspberry. Peculiar beer.
It is unfortunate this looks quite flat, and it lacks body in the drinking.
Vanilla begins to push through and works with that dusty raspberry flavour. These are the dominant tastes.
It is a really nice idea for a beer, and I don’t know that this has hit any particular high note for me, not enough stoutness about it in the drinking to make you really sit up and notice.
Near the end you begin to get a hint of the chocolate in this, but it’s late to the piece and didn’t revive my flagging attention span.
The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 7 of its things from the thing. I don’t think this is good beer. I think it’s a nice beer that tastes a bit strange but it isn’t like a stout in any way, when you close your eyes you’re not confused to thinking it is. It’s a bit thin and lacking, and the flavours are a bit muddled and a bit weird. Nice to try, once, and I’m done.
The double dip review
- Where did I get it? All the good places have it.
- Am I enjoying it? For novelty value I am, it’s not good beer though.
- Would I have another? Not in this format.
- Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? For Novelty value only, it doesn’t have enough to kick on or actually warrant a conversation though.

SWEET STOUT
Dark brown to black in colour. Sweet stouts come in three main varieties – milk stout, oatmeal stout, and foreign stout. Milk stouts are made with the addition of lactose, and are sweet, low-alcohol brews. Oatmeal lends a smooth fullness of body to stouts, while foreign stouts are stronger (6.5-8% abv) and have a sweet malt profile and high esters. All of the sweet stouts are noted for their restrained roastiness in comparison with other stouts, and low hop levels.
A life just as ordinary 
Interesting … in America, Rocky Road is chocolate, marshmallow, and peanuts. Usually in candy bar form. What you describe — chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry — is what we call Neapolitan when the three flavors are combined in one carton of ice cream.
To me, the mix of flavors as you describe them in the beer seems a little too much.

Food is a funny thing, I’ve never seen it with nuts in, and yes neapolitan is neapolitan whevever you go . It was tart from the raspberries and there wasn’t enough chocolate. The marshmallow disguised as vanilla just added more sweetness. It was a strange drink, with potential but it was a bit all over the place. Now Rogue ales do some beer with the doughnut people and they’ve managed to be completely excessive, the maple walnut one springs to mind for instance.

There’s a new brewery in town that is serving all sorts of odd concoctions. White Mocha is one. Salted Cucumber is another. Sea Salt IPA is a third. They have a few “normal” brews on tap. But everything seems to have a bit of a twist to it. I think these things are starting to go a bit too far.

“Salted Cucumber” nope nope nope. It’s almost like they’re treating is a cupcakes, make a small batch the hipsters and the followers will lap it up eventually, Make another batch, what’s the fruit of the day? I hated the cucumber sour that was made by a local brewer here, I can’t imagine it’s any better. Sour beers too, they can get in the sea. Looking at the most popular beer lists you only ever see the traditional standards, perhaps some have a little more of something than others, but you never see a strawberry Pilsner for instance.

Yes. The chance of my sampling Salted Cucumber are less than slim and none. When I go to the new craft breweries these days, I find myself looking for a basic pilsner or ale and seeing all of the sours and the super-hopped options and wondering what happened.
