A life just as ordinary

Just like you, but different

Beer – #1121 – 8 Wired Brave Old World – Patersbier

The Father’s Beer… I’m having two things, some Vinyl Music that I just purchased, Sunhouse – Crazy on the Weekend, and an 8 Wired Brave Old World – Patersbier, which is part of 8 Wired’s series bringing historic beer styles back to life in modern New Zealand.

The Father’s Beer

8 Wired Brave Old World – Patersbier is brewed by 8 Wired Brewing in Warkworth, 🇳🇿 New Zealand in the style that is a Belgian Single / Patersbier and is a beer of 4.0% ABV.

Unlike high-octane Trappist styles like dubbels and tripels, Belgian Single Style Ales have a lower ABV and a lighter body. The sessionable working beer of the monks themselves, Patersbier (meaning ?Father?s beer?) is crisp, bready, and enriched by Belgian yeast. Whether you?re getting stuck into an afternoon of Gregorian chants, or mowing your lawn, a Patersbier goes down oh so smoothly.

So, What could possibly go wrong?

This is the seventh beer in the Brave Old World series, and this one is inspired by the Trappist style Single Ales of old. Pretty sure I’ve not had the other 6, but memory can be fickle, I could check the app but that’s called research.

The beer pours a hazy golden colour with a brilliant white head that holds well in the glass. There’s a lovely aroma of fresh bread, subtle spice, and a hint of Belgian yeast character that promises something special.

This is wonderfully crisp and bready on the palate. The Belgian yeast brings that characteristic gentle bubble gum, spice pepper and there’s a subtle clove note, but it’s all beautifully restrained, gorgeously light enough, and very taste to make it a genuinely sessionable beer. The carbonation is lively, almost champagne-like, which adds to that sense of refreshment.

What strikes me most is how 8 Wired have captured the essence of what these monks were after – something flavourful and interesting that you could drink while getting on with your work. It’s not showy, it’s not trying to blow your head off with flavour, but it’s deeply satisfying in a way that makes you appreciate the craft.

The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 9 of its things from the thing. A cracking example of a style that deserves more attention, executed with the care and skill you’d expect from 8 Wired. Sessionable in the best possible sense.

The double dip review – or TL:DR

Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? Yes, it is a lovely beer full of flavour and depth.
Where did I get it? The local Liquoreland Store
Am I enjoying it? Yes, very much so.
Would I have another? Yes of course, 3 or 4 possibly 🙂

Music for this:  I have no idea where I stumbled over this music from, but I am totally in love with it. Only released originally on CD this has been re-mastered for vinyl for Record Store Day, and I got one !!

Belgian Single / Patersbier

The Belgian Single, also known as Patersbier or “Father’s beer,” represents the humble, everyday drinking beer of Trappist monasteries. While the monks brewed stronger beers like dubbels and tripels to sell and fund their monasteries, the Patersbier was what they drank themselves during meals and throughout their working day. Typically ranging from 4-6% ABV, these beers are characterized by their crisp, bready malt character, subtle Belgian yeast spiciness, and a dry, refreshing finish. They’re proof that lower alcohol doesn’t mean less flavour – just different priorities.
