We had 4 trees in front of our house, right on the boundary line, and two of them were close to a drain, and you know the horror stories about roots and drains and repairs.
So MrsPdubyah said they had to go. So they did.
Naturally you want to explore your options before taking on a project, and it came down to two Options:
Option (1)
Option (2)
The stump remover\grinder chap will be here monday to take out the very bottom part of the trees, and a couple bags of soil and some new grass, and then I have enough for a cricket pitch. Just in time for summer. Or a water slide.
The saddest part is how little bulk there is in a tree.
When I see trees have been cut down I don’t like it. When we moved into our current house, there were these two great trees in the backyard, but the Mrs. wanted a swimming pool right where those trees were. Down went the trees, in went the pool. Ten years later, nobody uses the pool. I’d like the trees back.

The row of bushes that make the hedge, we planted those because we knew we’d have to take the trees out. I’d rather have kept them too, but they may have damaged a drain, I’m sure MrsP has a plan. It’s certainly not a pool, waterside, or a cricket pitch at this point.

Yes, I understand the concern with the drain. It’s a shame you won’t be getting that water slide.
