Beer – #680 – Weezledog – Hopster *keg*
I’ve had before this in bottle, when I rated it 9 things, and I’ve had this out an about, because I just rate it, an now I got me some from the fill-station. Three, Three, Four and Thee
It’s all about the hops
1 litre of a beer that is 6.7% ABV, over 100 IBU things, that’s around 201 calories a serve size, and in total about 5.29 standard drink units.
For Weezledog Brewing Company brewed at Black Sands Brewing Company this is in the style that is of India Pale Ale (IPA).
This beer should help to separate the posers from the true hop heads.
No I don’t ‘love’ it like that.
Despite the full 100 IBU of bitterness, theoretically a fair bit more, on top of a base containing absolutely no crystal or specialty malts the fact that just a shade over 2% of the hops are added during the boil ensures that the bitterness is smooth, then the rest of the hops are added through both a whirlpool and dry hop schedule.
This beer shows just what is possible with our local hops. There is so much going on that you just have to taste it, savour it, and enjoy the flavour evolution as it warms.
NZIPA is a great style, only emerging commercially in recent years. This is a beer to sort the posers from the passionate, this post ultra-modern new world interpretation of the India Pale Ale style has the most simple of malt bases designed to truely showcase the huge character of Kiwi hops.
Hugely popular around the world no NZ brewery should really resist the urge to brew a solid NZIPA.
It’s all about the hops.
So, what could possibly go wrong? Nelson Sauvin, Southern Cross, Motueka, Pacific Jade and Pacifica hops. Get in!
This is an impossibly pretty orange colour in the bottle, cloudy hazy, almost art.
A melange of aromas as you pop that top, it seems lightly carbonated to judging only by the faint hiss and not the bold pop.
Not so much by way of head, but I can live with that, aroma in the glass is dark grassy, taste is all of its bitterness, but initially smooth and enveloping with a lovely dry finish and lingering bitterness in the mouth. It is everything I remembered.
Quite a lot of favours in this, might be mango, lots of that dry resinous thing, but mostly I get the tang of the Nelson Sauvin hop, and that reminds me why I like this variety and the taste it gives.
So what you have here then is a fully flavour and intense flavour at that, beer, with a really soft in, and a really cracking finish, and then that lingering bitter grass dryness.
It’s almost addictive.
I don’t think this is the best IPA made, heck I don’t think it’s the best IPA I’ve ever had, I’d be pretty sure that it’s not even the best IPA in NZ, but what I can say is that I’ve been to this well a few times and each time it never disappoints and is the best drinking IPA you could hope for.
The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 9 of its things from the thing. Nine. Just nine. I wanted some head. It’s hard to say something bad about this as a beer but It isn’t breathtaking brilliant, it isn’t different, it is somehow, despite the hop list, more basic and honest, it is what it is, and every time it is just a bit good, enjoyable and very moorish. I weep as I finish the last glass.
The double dip review
- Am I enjoying it? It is a cracker of a beer, looks great, taste is brilliant.
- Would I have another? How could you go past this?
- Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? I’d make new friends just to share this with them I think it’s that good an IPA. It might not be the worlds best, or even the best one I’ve ever had, but it’s the one I’ve come back to again, and for me that is a bit unusual.

INDIA PALE ALE & IPA
India Pale Ale gets its name and unique style from British brewers who were making beer for export to India. This style has an intense hop flavor which was used to preserve the beer for the long voyage. India Pale Ale has a golden to copper color with a medium maltiness and body. The aroma is moderate to very strong. IPAs work especially well at cutting the heat of chili, vindaloo or Sichuan cuisine.
A life just as ordinary 
Sounds and looks beautiful and you look incredibly happy with that bottle in your hands.
