A life just as ordinary

Just like you, but different

Beer – #720 – Panhead – Port Road Pilsner

Continuing the Pilsner theme, I splashed out on a craft beer version

“a bright golden hue beneath a fluffy white head”

A 500ml bottle of a beer that is 5.2% ABV, that’s around 156 calories a serve of this, a 40 IBU beer. This would be 2.05 standard drink units.

Brewed by Panhead Custom Ales  in the style that is a  Pilsener and they are in Upper Hutt, New Zealand

Panhead brewery pilsner. Named after the port road drag races.

Fluffy white head and full body

Fluffy white head and full body not too bright.

A classic Kiwi hop style of passionfruit and grapefruit – like a beer version of your New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Also, made with a hybrid of New Zealand and German malts.

The classic kiwi hop profile of passionfruit, grapefruit and sauvignon blanc characters on a combo of New Zealand and German malts. For sentimental reasons we’ve named our Pilsner after the Port Road drags, Petone‘s answer to either Fast and Furious or American Graffiti, we’re not sure which

So, what could possibly go wrong?

That has a fairly hoppy and earthy aroma on opening, and a tinge of sour, but  not offensively so.

Pour is a slightly cloudy straw yellow, with a nice fluffy head,

That has a real punch of bitterness and a burst of hops, and a dry finish and a lingering that is accented by a wonderful tropical aroma.

Panhead Port Road PilsnerA quite intense taste really, but I think that this might be a beer better served colder than warmer.

There are favours in this, I’d go for tropical over much else but its a loose description and I couldn’t pick a particular tropical fruit that it might be, just that it seems fruity in some way.

A nice fullish mouth way that is, and a beer that is quite engaging and I can see how it’d have a few fans amongst the lager types.

In a thrice then this has gone the way of other quaffable cold pilsners, in a hurry, and then I scratched my head and wondered why I only had the one, and then I remembered that it’s all I needed

The pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 8 of its things from the thing. This is a fine bit of beer, with some hop bite, bags of aroma, a nice mouthfeel and a decent finish and lingering aftertaste that isn’t all unpleasant. Much enjoyed it, but much enjoyed it more when it was colder, and I don’t think that has anything to do with the changing taste profile as it warmed.

The double dip review

  • Am I enjoying it? It’s a right cracker.
  • Would I have another? I would easily have another, I’m sorely tempted to ask someone to bring me one home from their travels.
  • Would I share with a friend on a porch and set the world to rights? Served cold on a hot day this is a brilliant beer, easy drinking but also offering a few things to chat over and discuss. Nice.

Music for this : ” Coffee or Not ” ” Everything is Falling Down ” on Spotify .Coffee Or Not is a Belgian band based in Brussels. Soho and Renaud record music quite electric but where vocal harmonies have an important place.

PILSENER

While the definition of “pilsner” is open to much debate in the beer community, it generally refers to pale, hoppy lagers, ranging from 28IBUs and up.
