Epic 15 îs a celebration beer, “This year is Epic’s 15th anniversary and we are also commemorating the 2000th brew at Steam Brewing Company” with an American style Barleywine. It is a beer that can be cellared, or it can be enjoyed now, as I am.
Epic Brewing Company (NZ) make the Epic 15 in Auckland, New Zealand, and this one is a Barley Wine / Wheat Wine / Rye Wine with an ABV of 10.2% and around that 306 calories a serve size. This bottle contains 4 standard drinks in NZ.
I’m not a big an of the American style Barleywine, so what could possibly go wrong?
The aroma is a beer that is very hoppy. The pour is a beer that is a lovely chesty brown with a large head that is tinged brown. It is a beer that is lovely to look at. That green hoppy aroma has only got stronger in the glass.
The taste is a beer that is quite heavily malted and gives the impression of being a bit sweet, and it sits over quite a bold alcahol presence. There is quite a nice lingering of that bitter and sweetness. It is quite a heady beer, and one that you need to be paying attention to. As it warms you also being to sense that alcohol tang and sting looming. This shouldn’t be a surprise, right?
Based on my recent experiences of the American Style of Barleywine I’d say this was pretty much in the money, but it hasn’t made me appreciate or enjoy them more, as I find them a bit harsh and brash particularly in the use of the hops and the bitterness that they bring.
The Pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 8 on the arbitrary number scale. It’s not for me, but I really appreciate that this, as far as my experience goes, is on the money as to style, and I might not like the style but I do enjoy and appreciate the bits of it that I expected. You should get one, I think you’d be impressed and would enjoy it.
Filles De Kilimanjaro by Miles Davis is what’s playing on Spotify, this is after I struggled with Bitches Brew. I’m no better off.
You will note that the alcohol content is 10.2000% abv. This is a fun little throwback to Epic’s 10th anniversary beer where the alcohol was 10.1000% to represent 10 years and 1000 brews. This time it represents the 2000th brew and the fact we are only releasing 2000 bottles.
Epic Brewing Company in Auckland, New Zealand is mainly inspired by its founder’s and brewer’s goal to make epic beers that will provide epic experience for people who love beers. Staying true to its name, Epic Brewing Company is dedicated in making craft beers that are great in their aromas, flavors and quality. Beers at Epic Brewery were formerly brewed at Steam Brewing Company. In 2007, Luke Nicholas took over the brewery. He studied the essence and importance of craft beers in California and developed love for American hops and ales. He took everything he learned and his passion for beers to the Epic Brewing Company. Since then, the brewery continues to thrive in its beers with varying flavors of malt, hops and aromas
Herevana beers are those I drink at home, I’m not at some beer festival, like, for instance, Beervana, but am just in my kitchen, usually, dining room table, sometimes, or outside, occasionally, where I can take an average picture and write in real time about the beer that I’ve invested in, both in a monetary and emotional way.
