Isthmus Gone Troppo. A change of pace form the IPA’s to the other end of the taste ladder, here’s a sour! There are only two beers left from the 6 pack, this and a Stour. I think I got the order on this pair correct.
I’m not a big fan of passionfruit but I do like a mango. I’m not overly enthusiastic about sour beers. I’ve also got chips and dips New Zealand styles, so It’s all happening here.
Isthmus Brewing : Isthmus Gone Troppo is brewed in Auckland, 🇳🇿, New Zealand as a Berliner Weisse – Flavored / Catharina Sour with 4.5% ABV and 10 IBU. this is 1.6 drink units in NZ
10 is quite a low bitterness number.
A lovely fruity aroma on opening, both passionfruit and mango at the same time, I’m intrigued.
It is bright mango orange! and it looks magnificent, and there’s no head which I wasn’t expecting anyway, so that’s off to a flyer.
The aroma is juiced up!
This is a shamefully indulgent fruit filled mouth-party. It is really intense and really full of flavour. This is the best kind of beer in the ‘sour’ style in my own opinion. The base is lovely and soft and the sourness is there but it is only there as a carrier for a huge bundle of flavours.
I thought that sourness was quite low, I was wrong, on second (third) sip there it is with a puckering nudge that makes you smack and lick your lips.
It’s been a while since I’ve had a sour beer this good and in my own preference zone.
I don’t quite know what more I can see, this is something quite marvellous and very enjoyable, very easy to drink and it is going down more rapidly than I’d hoped.
The Pdubyah-o-meter rates this as 9 on the arbitrary number scale. It’s not like me to be so enthusiastic about a sour beer, if I’m out and I have them they are usually the starter beer, because they both refresh and somewhat reset the palate for most things that follow, usually you don’t get a clash of flavour points that would ruin the experience. I’d say if I was out and about that I’d go this again, it really is quite pleasing and quite pleasant.
Music . Astronaut Meets Appleman – King Creosote. Something light and airy to while away an afternoon.
Herevana beers are those I drink at home, I’m not at some beer festival, like, for instance, Beervana, but am just in my kitchen, usually, dining room table, sometimes, or outside, occasionally, where I can take an average picture and write in real time about the beer that I’ve invested in, both in a monetary and emotional way.

Brewers Notes
The Flavoured Berliner Weisse is a refreshing, low-alcohol German wheat beer with a clean lactic sourness and a very high carbonation level. A light bread dough malt flavor supports the sourness, which shouldn’t seem artificial. Compared to a lambic, the berliner weisse is generally not as acidic and has a clean lactic sourness with restrained to below sensory threshold funk. Also lower in alcohol content. The beer is flavored with a particular ingredient and the union of the beer’s character with the flavoring element is a critical aspect of the beer (For example: fruits, spices, herbs, vegetables, coffee, honey, chocolate, maple sirup, chilies, nuts, vanilla, liquor – BUT not including Smoked malt, barrel-aging or a Sour element resulting from the brewing process). This style also includes the Catharina Sour beer style, which is basically like a stronger Berliner Weisse made with fresh fruit.
